Keith Curtis started K&J Plant Hire in 1979 as a one-man operator with a JCB 3C Wheeled Digger.   As the business developed there was more call for good reliable operators, and as the extensive database of clients grew another wheeled digger was added in 1980 and the first employee joined the team.   As time went by and the company’s reputation grew, further machines were purchased along with staff to operate them.   With the ever-increasing workload Keith decided to employ an operator to replace himself so he could spend more time in the office dealing with the paperwork and managing the contracts that were being awarded.   Today the company has around 45 employees and undertakes work as found on this website.

In 1993 the first 45 tonne excavator was added to the fleet to cope with quarry work, which included rock breaking, loading crushers & screeners and removing overburden. A further 45 tonne excavator was purchased in 1995, and with another 1998, it made K&J Plant Hire one of the very few plant hire companies in the South West to have 3 x 45 tonne excavators with hammers.

Along with the 45 tonne excavators, various other machines are operated by the company including 3 x 25tonne dump trucks, 2 x 30tonne dump trucks, excavators from 3 tonnes to 45 tonnes, tracked dumpers, dozers, tracked loading shovels and agricultural tractors.

To ensure the quality of service given, and the reliability of the machinery kept to an optimum, there are fully skilled mechanics on hand, a fully licensed welder/fabricator and a service vehicle complete with all the latest tools.

To ensure that the quality of service was maintained to a high standard, the company acquired ISO 9002 standards. Keeping quality to an optimum standard with all operators CPCS Card qualified.   A new office and workshop facility was opened in 2003, again equipped with all the latest tools and equipment to ensure reliability of all machinery owned.

After 25 years of efficient, reliable service to the construction industry the Curtis family are still heavily involved in the day to day running of K&J Plant (contractors) Ltd.
